Purim 2026 – Director Brent Johnson

Purim 2026

The story of Esther on Purim, taking place in 4th-century BCE Persia, celebrates how Queen Esther risked her life to save the Jewish people from a genocide plotted by Haman, the king’s advisor. Alongside her cousin Mordecai, Esther exposed Haman’s plan to King Ahasuerus, resulting in Haman’s execution and the saving of the Jews.
Key Details of the Purim Story:
  • The Plot: Haman, angered that Mordecai refused to bow to him, convinced King Ahasuerus to sign a decree to destroy all Jews in the kingdom on the 13th of Adar.
  • The Risk: Esther, a Jew who became queen, was instructed by Mordecai to approach the king, even though entering the inner court uninvited was punishable by death.
  • The Courageous Act: After a three-day fast by the Jewish community, Esther approached the king, who extended his scepter, sparing her life.
  • The Reversal: Esther revealed Haman’s plot and her own Jewish identity, leading the king to hang Haman on the very gallows he built for Mordecai.
  • The Celebration: Purim (meaning “lots,” referring to the lots Haman cast) is celebrated on the 14th of Adar with joy, reading the Megillah (Book of Esther), sending food gifts (mishloach manot), giving charity to the poor, and wearing costumes.
