The story of Esther on Purim, taking place in 4th-century BCE Persia, celebrates how Queen Esther risked her life to save the Jewish people from a genocide plotted by Haman, the king’s advisor. Alongside her cousin Mordecai, Esther exposed Haman’s plan to King Ahasuerus, resulting in Haman’s execution and the saving of the Jews.

- The Plot: Haman, angered that Mordecai refused to bow to him, convinced King Ahasuerus to sign a decree to destroy all Jews in the kingdom on the 13th of Adar.
- The Risk: Esther, a Jew who became queen, was instructed by Mordecai to approach the king, even though entering the inner court uninvited was punishable by death.
- The Courageous Act: After a three-day fast by the Jewish community, Esther approached the king, who extended his scepter, sparing her life.
- The Reversal: Esther revealed Haman’s plot and her own Jewish identity, leading the king to hang Haman on the very gallows he built for Mordecai.
