In 1948 Israel became a nation. From that point on, Jews from countries in Europe, the Middle East, and around the world, have migrated to Israel. From 1948-1992, over 2 million people immigrated to Israel. One of these major migrants are the Russian Jews. There are now approximately 449,000 Russian Jews living in Israel. The remaining 265,000 reside in Russia or the United States. Most Jews living in Israel speak Hebrew, but the Russian Jews continue to speak Russian. Today’s Judaism is a Rabbinic Judaism which places emphasis on Torah study and hosts their meetings in the synagogue.
